What happens during a gynecology annual exam?
Annual exams are essential in preventing certain conditions and treating current issues. You can expect your provider to conduct various screenings.
During your exam, you sit on the exam table and place one arm behind your head. Your provider uses two fingers and circular motions around each breast. This allows them to identify abnormalities or signs of breast cancer, such as a lump.
You can use this technique to check your breasts at home regularly.
For this exam, you change into a paper robe, lie on the exam table, and place your feet in stirrups resting at the end of the table.
Your provider then inserts a lubricated small metal tool (speculum) into your vagina. This may feel cold and slightly uncomfortable, but overall, it is painless.
The speculum allows them to check your vagina, vulva, uterus, and cervix for signs of abnormalities.
Physicians recommend getting a pap smear every three to five years. During your pelvic exam, your provider uses a long, thin swab to gather cells from your cervix. This allows them to test for any signs of cancerous cells.
If you haven’t had a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, they may recommend getting one.
